The exhibition Som en tunn linje mellan dig och mig/ As a thin line between you and me builds on themes; man and nature, the controllable and the unpredictable, where the artist examines and problematizes definite, cultural notions and scientific truths about what we call nature.
Unconsciously or consciously, we experience nature through our collective and subjective memories. Shaped by our cultural heritage, nature is associated with mystery, spiritual rituals and a lost paradise. Nature becomes a mirror onto which we project both our fears and our desires.
As nature shrinks and ecosystems collapse, we seek comfort in our memories and put our faith in scientific progress.
The title Som en tunn linje mellan dig och mig (As a thin line between you and me) refers to the physical distance created by the glass that separates the viewer from the dioramas and the plants in the botanical institutions that inspired Cunico – as well as to the distance that seems to grow ever greater between our civilization and our origins.
Through the artistic process, the works become a reflection of an inner and an outer world, reminiscent of the abstract spatiality of the mirror.
Who or what is behind the glass?
The mirror can also be a metaphor for a window onto something new and, just as in the works, offer a reversed perspective beyond existing systems and physical layers, where we are allowed to reflect on our own place in a larger context.
